Kandid is allows users to share photos and text in a local setting, either privately within their campus, or publicly with others nearby. With a look and feel very similar to well-known anonymous messaging app Secret, Kandid focuses on college students. The app keeps users completely anonymous; usernames and emails are not required and no personal information is collected when you download the app. Like Secret, you can share images and thoughts anonymously and others nearby can comment and private message one another....

The Kindle has just rolled out one such update — Kindle readers can now toggle a switch in their settings to make the cover of the book they’re currently reading turn into the device’s lock screen. Simple, easy, and something users have been demanding for years, the Display Cover feature makes reading your Kindle even more like picking up the physical version. The grants, which come from MTI’s Cluster Initiative Program, were given to organizations supporting Maine’s agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, and food production cluster and Maine’s composites and advanced materials cluster. The Maine Grain Alliance of Skowhegan received $50,000 for a feasibility study that will inventory existing grain drying and storage infrastructure along convenient trade routes, research technologies, and financing options to improve this infrastructure. FocusMaine, in partnership with Gulf of Maine Research Institute and the Maine Aquaculture Association, received $219,600 to develop business development tools and attempt to unlock access to traditional financing for Maine aquaculture companies....

McDonald’s Is Deploying Kiosks to Combat Rising Costs McDonald’s has begun introducing kiosks throughout its U.S. locations. These kiosks are likely a glimpse into the future as major food chains have been complaining about increased costs and the threat of a higher minimum wage. Initially the kiosks will not be used in place of employees. As time goes on, though, and more people begin to use them, it seems likely that a reduction in the headcount would occur....

In 2018, that’s a service that Patreon’s users are increasingly interested in. After all, last month marked the lowest point in Patreon PR history: A December 6 announcement revealed Patreon’s plans to swap out a five percent service fee for creators with a transaction fee that would charge supporters 2.9 percent of their pledge combined with a flat rate of $0.35 per pledge. Sleeping tabs were first announced in September 2020, then rolled out in December. The feature does just what it sounds like: Tabs will go to sleep when they haven’t been used recently, saving memory and CPU use until they’re clicked and wake up again. Sleeping Tabs The new update allows pages that are sharing a browsing instance with another page to still go to sleep when needed. According to the Microsoft blog announcement, this will let an average of 8% more tabs go to sleep — with each sleeping tab saving the Microsoft Edge browser 85% of the memory and 99% CPU that a non-sleeping tap would use....

The Microsoft Ventures Accelerator Tour is visiting 11 US cities to spread the word about their accelerator programs that take place in 7 cities (Bangalore, Beijing, Berlin, London, Paris, Seattle, and Tel Aviv) around the world. More specifically, this tour is to promote the Machine Learning Accelerator in Seattle which is currently accepting applications for their new class beginning on February 2, 2016.
